Seymour To Get New CVS

A new, free-standing CVS Pharmacy will be built at the corner of West Street and Route 67 next to Oxmour Plaza.

Mike DeAngelis, director of public relations for CVS, said the building will be 12,000 square feet. The work was scheduled to start this week.

CVS, based in Woonsocket R.I., anticipates the opening of the new store in late spring 2010. He said he did not know how many new jobs will be created with the opening of the new store next year, but said that as they get closer to opening, he would provide more information about job opportunities.

The new store will be built at 215 – 223 West Street and calls for the demolition of a home on the site. The entrance to the store will be through the current entrance of Oxmour Plaza and there will be an exit (right only) on West Street.

The current CVS, located at 277 Bank Street in Klarides Village, will remain in operation until the new store opens, town officials said.

First Selectman Robert Koskelowski said that if CVS had not found a location in town for a free-standing building, the company would have moved out of town.

They (CVS) wanted to have a drive-thru window and were going to move if they did not find a new location,’’ he said.

The new CVS will be less than a mile from a new Walgreens that is being built on Route 67 and Old Drive. The new Walgreens is expected to open in the fall, Koskelowski said.

Koskelowski said there should not be a problem with traffic at the planned location for the new CVS.

About 95 percent of the people who use CVS travel on Route 67 to get there, so we do not see many additional traffic issues,’’’ he said.

Koskelowski said building permits have already been taken out for the new pharmacy, which will resemble other CVS stores. There will also be plantings around the building, he said.

CVS has other stores in the area including Derby, Ansonia, Southbury and Naugatuck.
