Seymour Tops Naugatuck, 4-3

Freshman Carissa Wasikowski lined a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to left field to score senior captain Amanda Willette to give Seymour a 4 – 3 home victory over Naugatuck Thursday.

The game was on the line and I had to play my best and make contact and score her,” Wasikowski said. I focused and I kept my eye on the ball. I went with the pitch and I did what I had to do. I did it for my seniors.”

Thursday was Senior Day” for the Seymour softball team.

Willette got things started for the Wildcats, who raised their record to 13 – 4, by leading off the ninth with a bunt single. The captain was 3 – 5 at the plate with two bunt singles and an infield hit, which epitomized Seymour’s strategy of executing small ball to perfection.

It was instrumental in it’s getting past Naugatuck (13 – 4).

I took a lot of pitches and used a lot of concentration because I was nervous,” Willette said.

Willette then stole second and moved to third on junior Kim Ferris’ sacrifice bunt.

I had to run my butt off and use my heart to get there,” Willette said.

Seymour coach Ken Pereiras said, Amanda Willette makes things happen when she gets on base,” Seymour coach Ken Pereiras said.

Junior Stephanie Burt (1 – 4) followed Ferris with a flyout to right field, which set the stages for Wazikowski.

The righty Burt kept the Wildcats in the game with a masterful performance on the mound. She pitched a complete game and allowed six hits on three earned runs with four walks, one intentional, and 14 strikeouts.

I tried to keep it off the plate and keep it from where they can touch it,” Burt said.
