A water main broke on Bungay Road in Seymour Thursday night, closing off part of the road to traffic until Friday morning as crews repaired the damage.
The break was first reported about 7 p.m.
An e‑mail sent by Aquarion Water Company to customers about 5:30 a.m. said the break had been repaired but that customers should expect brown water for part of the day until workers finished “flushing” the system.
Aquarion spokesman Peter Fazekas said an 8‑inch water main was damaged due to the freezing temperatures.
“The weather causes the ground to shift and that causes a break,” he said.
Ten Aquarion customers were directly affected by the break, he said. Repair work was slightly complicated by the fact the pipe was next to a natural gas line.
Bungay Road, which had been closed at its intersection with Bungay Terrace, was re-opened to traffic about 11 a.m. Friday after workers patched the hole where the break had occurred.
Sidewalks near the break were slick with ice where water from broken main had frozen.
Bungay Road resident Joe Macchio said he wasn’t surprised with the break, given the cold temperatures and the age of the water system.
“There’s been a lot of these lately,” Macchio said while walking to retrieve his newspaper. “I’ve got brown water in my toilet.”
A water main broke on Route 67 earlier this month.
The Valley Indy left two messages with Aquarion spokesmen Friday seeking more information.
