Santa Energy has picked up the entire cost of cleaning up an oil spill outside Bungay School in November.
“It cost us nothing,” Richard Belden, assistant superintendent of finance and operations for the school district, told the Board of Selectmen Tuesday evening.
The selectmen had requested an update on the status of the oil spill cleanup.
The spill happened the morning of Nov. 1, when an employee from Santa Energy was filling an underground tank behind the school.
The oil leaked from the top of the tank, because of what fire officials believed was a case of adding too much oil to the tank.
Firefighters estimated about 100 gallons spilled. Heating oil was seen in the rear parking lot, stretching toward an entrance to the building. The oil did not enter the building. The students were dismissed early.
Santa did not provide the school board with an idea of what the cleanup cost, Belden said.
Connecticut Tank Recovery sent a report to the state Department of Environmental Protection for review, Belden said. It could take a long time for the DEP to make any conclusions about the cleanup report, said Selectman John Conroy Jr.
In the meantime, that report was also given to the Town Counsel. The report was not made available to the Selectmen or the public at the meeting.
There are a lot of homes in the area with well water, but DEP spokesman Dennis Schain said at the time the department does not believe those wells are in danger of contamination.
