W. Kurt Miller, a first-term Republican member of the Board of Selectmen, expects to formally announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for First Selectman in a few weeks.
He told the Valley Indy in January that he was considering a run.
He recently set up an campaign page on Facebook where he’s been gathering support. He’s on Twitter, too.
His official announcement will be in mid-March.
His fundraising committee is scheduled to have its first meeting March 2.
“We’ll pinpoint a date and a location to do that, but I plan to have that ready to go by the end of the month, yes I’m running, but I haven’t officially announced it yet,” Miller said Tuesday. “As of now I anticipate being the only candidate, but I am not going to take anything for granted.”
His fundraising chairwoman is Annmarie Drugonis, a fellow Republican on the Board of Selectmen.
Miller, a former chairman of the town’s finance board, had told the Valley Indy in January he was unhappy with the way the town is being run. He cited a lack of accountability and lack of transparency, and a lack of professional business experience.
First Selectman Paul Roy, a Democrat in his first term, once again welcomed the challenge.
“It’s his decision to make, and I expect someone will be running against me. I heard he’s running and that’s fine,” Roy said.
Former First Selectman Robert Koskelwoski, also a Republican, said in January he was keeping his options open for another run.
Instead, he was named to the Board of Finance — and became its chairman.
Koskelowski said Tuesday he is supporting Miller in his First Selectman run.
“He think he is a strong candidate, and would be a good First Selectman,” Koskelowski said.
