Mayor Mark Lauretti will present his 2010-11 budget proposal for the city at a joint meeting of the Board of Aldermen and Board of Apportionment and Taxation at 5:30 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the City Hall auditorium.
Last year, a $110.3 million budget that kept taxes the same as the previous year was approved, according to the New Haven Register.
During the last budget cycle, Lauretti had presented a smaller budget proposal, of only $109.9 million, but the Board of Aldermen had voted to increase it.
This year, the Board of Education has already indicated it needs more funds to avoid layoffs and program cuts.
The Board of Education is asking for $66.5 million for 2010-11, a 5.6 percent increase over the current budget.
Even so, the proposal would still cause several cuts to programs and positions in the school system, the board has said.
