Shanghai Restaurant
What is your favorite Chinese restaurant?
If your answer is not Shanghai Restaurant in Shelton, then you obviously haven’t been there before.
Primarily a take out place, Shanghai also offers dine-in service. It had just enough seats for me and my fellow dinner clubbers.
Shanghai is famous for its General Tsao’s chicken combo. This combo includes more chicken and pork fried rice than should be consumed in one sitting for just $7.75. Oh yeah, it includes an egg roll, too. Just four of our members managed to eat the entire order, earning the Shelton Dinner Club’s coveted “freedom award.”
Each said it was a struggle.
The chicken is doused in a sauce like no other. It’s spicier and more flavorful than your average Tsao.
Every meal is served in gigantic portions, and you can expect to have leftovers to bring into work the next day. By then, food undergoes the “beef stew effect,” a mysterious condition that makes Chinese food taste even better the next day.
The employees at Shanghai are friendly and hardworking. Many dinner clubbers are on a first name basis with the staff.
They were able to start bringing out meals for our gang roughly 10 minutes after the first order.
While the food is phenomenal, the restaurant is no place to bring a date.
It’s your typical strip mall Chinese take out joint, featuring clichés such as the decorative water fountain, noisy soda machine and illuminated picture menus.
But that’s fine, because you probably will not eat in. This was my first time dining inside the restaurant and I’ve been eating from here for almost 10 years!
Shelton has become a hotbed for Asian cuisine of all styles, and unfortunately, not quality (sorry Kobis and Asian Bistro, you look nice but your food sucks). But I will argue to my death that Shelton has the best Chinese food (Shanghai) and the best sushi (Hunan Pan) around.
Like Campbell’s soup Shanghai is “MMMMMM, MMMMMM GOOD!
There is no doubt in my mind you will ever find Chinese food so great anywhere else in the tri-state!

The Shelton Dinner Club is a motley group of food mercenaries who wander the Valley, looking for new culinary adventures. Think ‘Kung-Fu’ crossed with ‘The A‑Team’ with a dash of ‘Iron Chef.’
