Shelton Dinner Club Versus . . .

Have you ever been down south for fried chicken? If not, it’s OK because you from the Valley you can go north up 15 to Hamden and get Louisiana-style chicken and fish at Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen!

I have not been to Louisiana in about 15 years, but I was down in North Carolina just two months ago for a wedding and ate at a place called Bojangles.

I thought now this is some authentic southern fried chicken,” but I am kicking myself now that I have eaten at Popeye’s.

The place is set-up like your typical fast food joint, complete with drive through window.

Dining in is the way to go because the tables were spacious enough to fit five at a booth designed for four. It’s fried food. You don’t want to mess up the interior of your car with any spills.

The prices beat the deals at KFC and the food is higher quality.

KFC is mostly breading and not much chicken, but at Popeye’ss you get more meat for your dollar and less thick crusty breading!

You can chose to just get chicken, or make any meal into a combo, adding a drink and your choice of side (which include Dinner Club favorites such as the Cajun French fries and mashed potatoes with Cajun gravy, among other options).

The only thing you need to be cautious about are the chicken nuggets. They seem like a deal when you can get the nine-piece combo for only $4.99, but they are more like popcorn chicken nuggets.

If you are looking for a snack it’s a deal, but as a dinner it just wouldn’t cut it (unless you’re a wimp or 6 years old).

Maybe it’s because we went at the dinner time rush, or maybe it’s because we brought 15 hungry maniacs to eat in a little fast food restaurant, but everyone got their food at different times and the line seemed endless when we first walked in to order.

A couple of our members were practically done with their meals by the time others were just getting food from the pick-up counter. Even though we all ate at different times, we kept each other company.

Some even went up a second time to really fill their bellies before claiming freedom!

It was a great feeling to have the manager on shift come out to us after our meal and thank us for the big dinner rush.

I would like to thank that manager right back for serving a group our size!

If you haven’t had great fired chicken in a while, hit up Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and have it southern style!
