Shelton Factory Fire Quickly Extinguished

A small section of smoldering insulation caused a fire in a crawlspace at the Chromium Process Co. factory building at 113 Canal St. Monday evening.

At about 4:39, a passerby saw smoke coming from the building.

Volunteer firefighters from Shelton and a haz-mat team from Derby responded to the scene.

Within five minutes the small fire was doused, said Shelton assistant fire chief Nick Verdicchio.

There were no injuries or haz-mat incidents reported, Verdicchio said.

Valentine Smith, a maintenance worker for Chromium Process Co., said the fire was likely caused by work done on the pipes Monday.

According to Smith, workers used a propane torch Monday afternoon to thaw out frozen water pipes at the factory.

It was only a three-foot piece of pipe insulation smoldering,” Smith said.

While haz-mat crews responded as a precaution, Smith said there wasn’t anything to worry about.

There’s nothing flammable in there anyway,” Smith said.

Chromium Process Co. makes plating for screws, faucets and washers, Smith said.
