Last year Shelton firefighters raised more than $7,000 at a head-shaving fundraiser to benefit childhood cancer research.
This year, they plan to exceed that mark — but need your help doing so.
They’ve scheduled a St. Baldrick’s event for April 6 at 2 p.m. at Downtown Danny O’s on Howe Avenue.
At the events, volunteers get their heads shaved to show solidarity for kids undergoing treatment for cancer and raise money for childhood cancer research.
The organization began in 2000 when a group of reinsurance executives turned a St. Patrick’s Day party into a head-shaving fundraiser and raised over $104,000.
The group now awards more childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.
Mark Starzecki, a firefighter at Shelton’s Huntington Fire Co. 3, is coordinating the fundraiser, which is in its second year.
Last year the event raised $7,477, smashing the $3,000 goal organizers had set.
“This year we will attempt to break $10,000,” Starzecki said Wednesday. “We are looking for more teams of ‘shavees’ and raffle prize donations from local businesses.”
