With the blessing of the Planning and Zoning Commission, ShopRite could be up and running in the former Shaw’s building on Bridgeport Avenue in six months.
The panel unanimously gave Grade A ShopRite of Shelton LLC the Christmas gift at its meeting Tuesday night in Planning and Zoning department’s third-floor office.
“We’ve gutted the whole store. If all goes well, we should be ready in six months,” said Rocco S. Cingari, company president. “Most of these requirements are reasonable. We know we can adhere to them.”
The conditions for approval call for screening the service areas and loading docks from public view, new brick masonry walls, adequate travel-way width and adherence to sign regulations.
The applicant wants to slightly expand the supermarket building at 875 Bridgeport Ave. from 64,394 square feet to 66,289 square feet. Renovations could cost up to $7 million, Cingari has said.
Shaw’s closed the Shelton store earlier this year along with one other branch.
ShopRite has stores in communities including Derby, Milford, West Haven, Norwalk and Waterbury. The proposed store would employ 175 people and be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
Wakefern Food Corp., ShopRite’s merchandising and distribution arm, and ShopRite together employ more than 50,000 people throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, according to the company’s Web site.
