Eighty-five students were inducted into the Shelton High School National Honor Society at a reception at Grassy Hill Country Club on Tuesday, December 15, 2015.
The student-led ceremony began with a welcome by NHS president Julia Mancini.
Following dinner, Shelton High School Headmaster Dr. Beth Smith offered congratulatory remarks.
She indicated that “these students meet the high academic and behavioral expectations at Shelton High School.”
She challenged them to “set examples for your peers, have the utmost integrity in your academics and continue to display scholarship, leadership, service and character. We are proud of our inductees and expect them to continue to strive for excellence.”
Mancini then communicated the history of the National Honor Society.
The four pillars of the National Honor Society were defined by the NHS officers.
Sara Henckel, NHS vice-president, outlined scholarship; Leanne Varga, NHS Secretary, described leadership; Nate Vargoshe, NHS Treasurer, delineated service; and Henckel concluded with character.
Mancini presented the new members. The traditional candlelight ceremony was led by Henckel, Varga and Vargoshe. Mancini then lead the inductees in reciting the NHS oath. The induction ceremony was planned by co-advisors, Lynn Coffin and Erik Martire. School administration and members of the National Honor Society Faculty Council were in attendance, as were family members.
