Shelton High School Science Fair Winners

The Shelton High School Annual Science Fair was held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the school’s auxiliary gymnasium. 

More than 238 projects, involving 391 students, were submitted. The fair was organized by the Shelton High School Science Department. 

Members from various community corporations, universities, retired educators, science teachers within the district and members of the Shelton Board of Education central office served as judges for the day. 

They communicated with students about their projects and projects findings. The awards assembly was held on Thursday, Feb. 7, in the school’s auditorium. Mrs.
Clark congratulated all of students for their accomplishments. 

Housemasters Mr. John Skerritt, Mr. Steven Swensen, and Mr. James Colandrea announced the winners. 

Dr. Beth Smith, headmaster, and Mark Holden, Shelton Board of Education Chairman, awarded certificates, plaques and cash prizes.

  • Which Angle of a Wind Turbine Blade Will Produce the Most Energy? By: Michael Offord and Chris Cybart
  • Chemical Compounds Breaking Down Stains by: Melissa Simons and Laura Ferris
  • What is the Effect of Fire on Flame Retardant Clothing? By: Michelle Kellett, Marisa D’Angelo and Alayna Tadduni
  • That’s what It’s All a Trout by: Carliana Percivalle and Emma Hanrahan
  • Water Absorbency by: Rachel Cataudella
  • Burning Down the House by: Colette Harley and Kelly Messemer

The following eight projects were overall winners and will participate in the Connecticut State Science Fair at Quinnipiac University in March:

Rigel Mahmood was congratulated for submitting the number one project in the Shelton High Science Fair that won the entire Fair. Over $1500 in prize money was awarded with monetary donations from Mayor Lauretti and the Shelton High School PTSO.
