A 28-year-old Shelton man is due in court today after allegedly tossing a hypodermic needle while running from cops.
Stefano Cervera, Jr. is charged with three counts of third-degree burglary and single counts of third-degree larceny, third-degree criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia, and interfering with an officer. In addition, he’s charged with theft of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm.
The gun charges are connected to a July 3 burglary in Shelton, but details from that crime weren’t available Monday morning.
According to a prepared statement from police, Officer Chris Nugent was on patrol July 4 when he saw several bags of tools stacked in a pile next to city-owned vehicles at the city’s Community Center at 41 Church St.
The officer saw one of the back windows on a city-owned vehicle was smashed.
A second police officer, Myles Dupont, then arrived at the scene and saw Cervera running toward the woods, police said.
“Officer Dupont chased the male into the woods. The male threw a hypodermic needle while being chased and was eventually caught by Officer Dupont,” Shelton police said in a statement.
Cervera Jr. was held over the weekend on a $125,000 bond pending an appearance in Superior Court in Derby today (Monday, July 7).
