Shelton Man Charged In Assault Outside Bar

A 21-year-old Shelton man was arrested early Sunday after police said he assaulted a Derby man outside a downtown bar.

In a prepared statement issued Monday (April 1) morning, Shelton police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said police were dispatched to a report of a fight outside Cuppy’s Cafe at 366 Coram Ave. about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police arrived and located the victim, a 52-year-old male from Derby, on the ground,” Kozlowsky said. The victim was going in and out of consciousness and was attended to by EMS personnel.”

Kozlowsky said the Derby man sustained injuries to his face and head.

The man was brought to a hospital and initially listed in serious condition, Kozlowsky said, but has since been released.

The two men had been engaged in a verbal dispute” before the altercation became physical, Kozlowsky said without elaborating.

Officers arrested Michael O’Connell, 21, of Buddington Road, at the scene.

O’Connell was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

He was held in lieu of $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby Monday (April 1), according to Kozlowsky.
