Shelton Man Charged In Motorcycle Rider’s Death

Police Monday charged a 64-year-old Shelton man with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle.

Lawrence Jackson, of Adams Drive, was traveling north in the area of 475 River Road Sept. 20, 2008 when he collided with a motorcycle being driven by 26-year-old Christopher Hasiotis of Catlin Place.

Police believe Jackson was attempting to make a left turn into a driveway when he collided with Hasiotis, who was traveling in the other direction.

Police also charged Jackson with failing to grant the right of way.

Jackson turned himself in at the police department after learning there was a warrant for his arrest.

He was released from police custody after posting a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24.

The department’s accident reconstruction team applied to a judge for the arrest warrant.

According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, the type of crash that took Hasiotis’ life is responsible for just under 50 percent of all motorcycle crashes.

The majority of time, the other driver involved in the crash — not the motorcycle rider — is found to be at fault for the accident, often for not granting the right of way, according to the Foundation.

A Web site, ForCarDrivers.com, explains that motorcycles are often tough to see because they are small and slip into a car or truck’s blind spot. In addition, items behind the motorcycle rider, such as trees bushes and other vehicles, often make the bikes difficult to see.
