Shelton Man Dies At Fairfield Lake

A Shelton man died today at Lake Mohegan in Fairfield.

Fairfield police identified the man as Frank Mazzabufi, 39.

An autopsy will be performed tomorrow, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said the death was an accidental drowning. She said it was the first drowning she knew of at Lake Mohegan, a 20-acre lake.

Mazzabufi’s body was pulled out of the water Thursday morning, according to the Fairfield Citizen.

Police and fire personnel were dispatched to search for a man who witnesses reported seeing jump off a wooded path into the water shortly after 10 a.m., and then begin struggling.

Lifeguards based at the beach dove in and said the man sank under water as they headed toward him on surf boards,” the Citizen reported.

It became a recovery effort after two hours,” Lussier said.

Lussier said Mazzabufi entered the water through a wooded path, and swam out to the section of the lake where he ended up going underwater. It was in an area not designated for swimmers, only fishing, Lussier said.
