Police: Man Waves Gun At Cars, Then Runs

Police arrested a Shelton man who allegedly flagged down drivers on Waverly Road Wednesday night wearing a mask and holding a BB gun.

Joseph Sul, 21, of 259 Waverly Road, flashed the weapon at several cars that drove down the street about 10 p.m., police said.

Sul was charged with criminal attempt at robbery/car jacking, brandishing a facsimile firearm, breach of peace, and reckless endangerment.

Sul allegedly told police the weapon was a BB gun, but police have yet to locate it.

One woman slowed down upon seeing Sul, and he motioned for her to get out of the car, police said.

The woman gunned the engine and pulled into a home’s driveway. It turned out to be Sul’s house, Shelton Det. Ben Trabka said.

Sul allegedly ran around the back of the house and hid inside, where police eventually caught him.

Sul’s mother, Judy Sul, 51, of the same address, was charged with interfering with police. Trabka said she tried to prevent police from capturing her son.

Trabka said Sul’s motive was not clear.

Sul and his mother were arraigned in Derby Superior Court Thursday morning.

Wednesday wasn’t their first run-in with police.

Trabka said Joseph Sul barricaded himself in his Waverly Road home in February, and held off police with a BB gun. No one was injured in the incident, but Sul allegedly shot the department’s police dog with the BB gun, Trabka said.

During the February incident, Judy Sul was also arrested when she tried to prevent police from taking her son into custody, Trabka said.

Joseph Sul is due in Derby Superior Court on Nov. 17 for the February charges.
