Shelton resident David Rennie thought he had won the lottery last March when he received a kidney transplant.
Turns out his lucky streak was just beginning.
A crew from HGTV recently “ambushed” Rennie and his family at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, informing him that his entry to a $1.5 million sweepstakes had been chosen out of more than 127 million.
Rennie’s prize includes a coastal retreat in Merritt Island, Florida, a 2016 GMC SUV, $250,000 cash, and a beautiful new boat.
Rennie is the father of two daughters and a former employee of the Boy Scouts of America.
According to the HGTV website, Rennie received a kidney transplant last March 2015 after being diagnosed with end stage renal disease.
“I thought I won the lottery with the kidney,” Rennie told HGTV. “That was life changing, but so is this. We just never thought it could get any better.”

Rennie said he had been following the network’s home giveaway sweepstakes for years.
“I binge-watched HGTV during my treatments prior to my surgery, and entered the giveaway regularly. In fact, my wife would give me grief for entering, and we were both sure nothing like this would happen to us,” he recalled.
