A police officer responding to a report of an armed robbery is in the hospital after crashing his cruiser.
Police received a 911 call at 1 a.m. Thursday from the parking area behind Porky’s Cafe at 50 Center St.
A woman who said she and her friend had just been robbed at gunpoint.
Officer Phil Norris, responding from River Road, lost control of his vehicle, drove up an embankment and crashed into the yard of a condominium on Laurel Heights Road.
Police said Norris complained of back pain and suffered several lacerations. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where, as of Thursday afternoon, he was still being evaluated.
The crash is under investigation by the department’s accident reconstruction team.
The gunman, meanwhile, was not caught.
He was described as a 150-pound black male, in his twenties, standing at about six feet tall. He was wearing a gray sweat shirt and a New York Yankees hat. He robbed an unspecified amount of money from both victims, but neither were injured.
