Shelton officials have confirmed the long-simmering rumor that ShopRite will replace Shaw’s on Bridgeport Avenue, the New Haven Register reported Wednesday.
Shaw’s, at 875 Bridgeport Ave., closed its doors July 25, with about 100 people losing their jobs.
The Massachusetts-based chain also closed a store in Bristol.
The ShopRite replacement rumor was floating among Shaw’s employees before the store closed.
Mark Hamstra, the editor of Supermarket News, a trade magazine, told the Valley Independent Sentinel in July that ShopRite is known for reasonable prices and a good selection.
The new ShopRite may include a bank and a pharmacy, the Register reported, and is expected to open in the fall.
