Shelton Parks And Rec Announces New Classes

The Shelton Parks & Recreation Department is offering the following classes at the Community Center, 41 Church Street.

Space is limited so those interested must pre-register in person; cash or check only. After a class has started, people may still sign up as long as there is room.

Information about the pool is posted on the city website. All other classes are posted on the Community Center Programs bulletin board located in the lobby. Information/Cancellation Phone Line: 203 – 331-4120.

The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department has a limited number of openings in their Women’s Softball League for the 2012 season. League play is Monday and Wednesday evenings July and August. The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will be holding their 32nd annual Summer Basketball Camp for boys ages 7 to 14 and girls ages 8 to 14. The directors of the camp are Shelton High School coaches Brian Gardiner and Mary Piccirillo. It will be held at the Shelton High School, the fee is $95 per player or $85 each for two or more from a family, check made out to ‘Shelton Recreation Basketball’. Registrations must be sent or dropped off to the Shelton Parks & Recreation Department at 41 Church Street. Applications are available there or at Blanchettes Sporting Goods. The camp is open to residents and non-residents.

Lego Camp June 25-29, 2012, Monday-Friday, Ages 5-7 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, Ages 8-10 1:00-4:00 pm, 5 days, $140.

The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will begin its 2012 Summer Playground Season for Shelton residents only on Tuesday, July 2, 2012 at 9:00 am. The 6 playground locations are Booth Hill School, Elizabeth Shelton School, Long Hill School, Mohegan School, Sunnyside School, and Pine Rock Park off Long Hill Avenue. The playgrounds will be open each Monday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and Tuesdays through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The program will run for 6 weeks beginning Tuesday, July 2, 2012 and end on Friday, August 10, 2012. Closed on rainy days. Children spending the entire day should bring their lunches. Registration at each playground will take place throughout opening week and is open for all children 6–14 years of age. It is important that parents inform the Playground Supervisors of any medical history of their children that might require immediate or emergency attention, such as allergies to insect or bee stings. Activity and Field trip information will be posted to inform parents of the calendar of events for each week. Included in the field trips will be selected movies, roller-skating and miniature golf, bowling and batting cage programs. Arts and Crafts will be offered to each playground throughout the season, a small fee will be collected to cover cost of materials.

The Shelton Parks & Recreation Department will be holding a boy’s Lacrosse Camp for those entering grades 3 through 8. The program will be 8:30 am to 12:00 noon, July 9-12, 2012 at the Shelton High School Turf field. Friday will be used as a makeup day if needed. The cost is $100 for residents and $125 for non-residents. Those interested must pre register at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street. Matt Read, the Shelton High Boy’s Varsity Head Coach, will be the director of the camp. Fundamentals and proper techniques covering all aspects of the game will be covered. Those attending are responsible for their own equipment including stick, gloves, mouth guard, helmet, arm and shoulder pads and cup.

The Shelton Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring a co-ed ‘Mat Time’ Wrestling Camp for ages 6 to 18 years of age at the Shelton High School, 120 Meadow Street, Monday through Thursday July 23-26, 2012. There will be morning and afternoon sessions with the option to attend both. The morning session runs from 8:30-11:30 am and the afternoon session is from 12:00-3:00 pm. Tuition is $95 per session or $175 for both, checks payable to: ‘City of Shelton’. Registration forms are available at the Community Center or Blanchettes Sporting Goods and must be returned to the Parks and Recreation Department at 41 Church Street. The Shelton – Derby Skate Park located on Riverdale Ave. in Shelton will be open June 4 – June 24: Monday – Friday, 3:00–6:00 pm; Saturday & Sunday, 1:00–6:00 pm and June 25 – August: Monday – Friday, 2:00–6:00 pm; Saturday & Sunday, 1:00–6:00 pm.
