The Shelton Parks and Recreation Commission wants to charge outside groups to use city fields to make some extra money and help manage an influx of outside requests to use the fields.
The commission discussed the proposal at its May meeting, but hasn’t taken any vote on the possible fees.
“We’re getting swamped with outside groups looking for fields,” said Ron Herrick, the director of the city’s recreation department, before the meeting.
Those groups include regional cricket teams and adult flag football teams.
The city’s fields are now used by Little League teams and other sports sponsored by the city’s recreation commission.
“This won’t affect the Smith family that wants to go up on a field and play soccer on a Saturday,” Herrick said. “It won’t affect the Little League or school teams.”
Commission members last month discussed whether to charge $50 for commission-sponsored teams, and $100 for out-of-town teams.
Right now only athletic clinics are charged, at a rate of $100 a day.
One proposal was that groups not based in Shelton or those collecting fees should pay $100 to use fields.
However, it was not clear what “based in Shelton” would mean — whether teams that had members from Shelton as well as surrounding towns should be charged at the local team rate.
