No Major Injuries In School Bus Crash

No students were injured when a Shelton Parks Department truck hit a school bus at the intersection of Nells Rock Road and Bridgeport Avenue this morning, according to police.

The driver of the parks department truck, Michael Cavallaro, 57, of Shelton, was taken to Griffin Hospital for minor injuries, according to a statement released by police Monday morning.

The accident happened at about 7:55 a.m., when the truck and the school bus approached the Bridgeport Avenue intersection from opposite sides. Cavallaro was coming from the west on Nells Rock Road and the school bus from the east on Platt Road.

As the school bus continued straight through the intersection, Cavallaro tried to take a left onto Bridgeport Avenue and hit the bus, police said.

Det. Ben Trabka said Cavallaro hit the bus at the front bumper on the driver’s side.

Cavallaro also hit a third vehicle after hitting the bus, police said.

The school bus was headed to Shelton Intermediate School with 24 students and the bus driver. No one on the bus was injured in the accident, police said.

Cavallaro was issued a ticket for taking an improper left turn.

Shelton Police and EMS crews responded to the scene.

Trabka said the truck was likely totaled. The bus had minor damage, but the students were transported to school in another bus anyway, Trabka said.

The third vehicle only had minor damage, Trabka said.
