Shelton Police Beginning ‘Block The Box’ Enforcement

Shelton police announced Wednesday they will ticket motorists who block the box” at several downtown intersections.

Aldermen last February adopted a state law allowing municipalities to fine motorists for driving into certain intersections without there being enough space on the opposite side for their vehicles.

The intersections are:

  • Howe Avenue and Center Street
  • Howe Avenue and White Street
  • Howe Avenue and Bridge Street
  • Center Street and Coram Avenue

The state law specifically exempts drivers of tractor-trailers.

Shelton police said in a press release Wednesday that motorists should be prepared for police enforcement at those intersections.”

Signs have been posted and the boundaries of the intersections have been marked with white paint.

Police they’ll issue $117 infraction tickets to violators.

The purpose of this law is not only to help with the flow of traffic, but also to allow emergency vehicles to get through the intersections safely,” Police Chief Joel Hurliman said in a prepared statement. We hope to have voluntary compliance with the law rather than issue tickets.”
