Shelton Police Chief Participates in Easter Rising Service

Shelton Police Chief Joel Hurliman spoke at a 95th anniversary Easter Rising event in New Haven this past weekend.

The annual ceremony mass remembers the 1916 uprising in Dublin, where Irish republicans tried to end British rule in the country.

Hurliman spoke about the history of the Forgotten Ten‘ — Kevin Barry, Thomas Bryan, Patrick Doyle, Frank Flood, Patrick Moran, Bernard Ryan, Thomas Whelan, Thomas Traynor, Patrick Maher and Edmond Foley.

The ten were hanged by the British during the War of Liberation from 1920 – 1921 after a short military tribunal where either skimpy or no evidence at all of their guilt was offered.

Music was provided by the New Haven Fire Department Emerald Society pipe band and the Irish National Anthem and the Star Spangled Banner were sung by Liz McNicholl.

A full Irish breakfast followed the event at Anna Liffey’s. The breakfast was a fundraiser for the New Haven St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
