The typical attire seen in the halls of Shelton High School on Fridays during the fall sports season is a sea of orange and black.
Shelton High students and staff put aside their orange and black on Friday, October 2nd. In support of cancer awareness Shelton High School students and staff were adorned in pink.
The cheerleader captains, Lauren Tregger, Kara Brighindi and Brianna McCormack, in conjunction with Mr. John Niski, Athletic Director, came up with the idea during one of their weekly meetings.
They wanted to have a cancer awareness theme at one of the Friday night football games and chose this past Friday’s game against Xavier, which was also the WCTX-My TV 9 Football Game of the Week. To prepare for the game the cheerleaders designed a “Shelton High School Awareness” pink t‑shirt.
Blanchette Sporting Goods donated some of the T‑shirts, which were sold in school along with pink Shelton hats. Students and staff were encouraged to wear pink to school on Friday and the “Real Fans Wear Pink” message was communicated to fans attending the game.
The SHS Marching Band, Pom Pon Dance Squad, Color Guard and other athletic teams supported the cause by wearing pink shirts.
Students from the SHS Make a Difference Club distributed pink ribbons at the football game.
Cheerleaders made awareness posters. Breast cancer awareness facts were read over the public address system in between plays during the game. Cheerleaders took up a collection from fans.
All in all over $1,200 was raised.
The proceeds will be sent to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Niski commented, “I was overwhelmed by the incredible show of support by our students, faculty, and fans for this worthy cause.”
Anyone wishing to make additional donations may do so through Mr. Niski in the SHS Athletic Office.
