Shelton Student A Finalist For Robotics Award

Shelton High School Robotics Team member Tyler Tallo was recently awarded the prestigious “Dean’s List Finalist” award at the Connecticut Regional FIRST Robotics Competition.

Tyler, a junior at Shelton High School, is a three-year member of the school’s robotics team.

Tyler was selected from over 100 nominations representing 56 teams from across New England. The award is akin to the MVP award for FIRST Robotics.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) created the award in honor of Jack Kamen, father to inventor and FIRST Robotics founder Dean Kamen, as a way to recognize the efforts of exceptional student achievement on robotics teams.

Tyler was nominated by his teammates and an application essay was submitted describing his accomplishments and contributions to the team.

From the application essay: “When he was 8 years old, Tyler told his parents that he wanted to become an engineer. He never let go of that dream and his curiosity for how things work led him to join the SHS robotics team. FIRST Robotics not only reinforced his commitment to his dream but set him on the path to achieving that goal. Tyler’s passion and drive for knowledge is reflected through his dedication and ability to motivate other team members… By understanding the foundations of engineering of going from concept to reality, he quickly became a great team asset by learning every aspect of the build from machining parts to soldering and wiring circuit boards … Tyler is always working to spread the message of FIRST and his passion can be seen at team demonstrations and community outreach programs such as Shelton Day and Sikorsky Family Day. Whether shooting T‑shirts to a crowd during a school pep rally or selling energy efficient light bulbs, he is always ready to help. He continues to think of new and innovative ways to spread the word of FIRST and applies the knowledge he has learned from FRC Robotics to real life situations.”

The Dean’s List Award “celebrates outstanding student leaders whose passion for and effectiveness at attaining FIRST ideals is exemplary.”

The students who earn FIRST Dean’s List Award status as either an Entrant/Nominee, Finalist or Winner, will not only be great examples of student leaders who have led their teams and communities to increased awareness for FIRST and its mission all the while achieving personal technical expertise and accomplishment, but it is FIRST’s intention that they will continue on, post-award, as great leaders of FIRST’s ever growing student alumni and as advocates of FIRST.

Tyler will now be considered with the other Dean’s List Finalist award winners from across the globe for the National Dean’s List Award recognition when he attends the FIRST Robotics Championship Event in St. Louis March 24 to 28 2013.

The Shelton High School Robotics team is extremely proud of Tyler Tallo and his commitment to SHS Robotics.
