Shelton Students Recognized By National Merit Program

CONTRIBUTEDDr. Beth A. Smith, Shelton High School Headmaster, has announced that four Shelton High School seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Letters of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, were presented to Liam Cummings, Scott Sheldon, Victoria Begley and Patrick Murphy.

Approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Although they will not continue on the 2014 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended students placed in the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Recognizing academically talented students plays a fundamental role in the advancement of educational excellence within our nation,” commented a spokesperson for National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The young people recognized as commended students represent some of the best and brightest minds in the country as demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program. We sincerely hope this recognition will provide them with additional educational outlets and motivate them in their pursuit of academic achievement.”

Alexandria Gumbs was recognized for as one of 31,000 Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. She scored in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2014 National Achievement Program when they took the 2012 PSAT/NMSQT.
