The Shelton Gaels managed an extra innings 5 – 4 win against the Jonathan Law Lawmen Friday behind the bat and arm of senior captain, Dan St. George.
The Gaels took an early 4 – 0 lead before the Lawmen regrouped in the late innings to tie the game and send it into extras.
St. George came on to relieve sophomore starting pitcher Ryan Zahornasky in the sixth inning and pitched out of two extra inning jams to nail down the win.
“Danny gutted it out. He’s pitched 10 innings in the last 3 days.” said Shelton coach Scott Gura.
The win raised Shelton’s season record to 8 – 3.
In the top of the 8th, Dan Guerrera and Zahornasky both walked, setting the table was set for the Gael’s hero. With two outs and facing the Lawmen’s closer, St. George raked a game winning single and scored Guerrera as the Gaels took the lead, 5 – 4.
“He found a way to win and had a clutch hit,” Gura said.
“I was hoping to get a nice base hit there and then get back onto the mound and shut them down,” St. George said.
Two of Shelton’s three losses come against the two top ranked teams in the state, Notre Dame West Haven and Amity.
“It’s nice to bounce back after Amity — that was a tough game,” St. George said. “I’m glad we bounced back today against a really good team in Law. We know that we can play with them (NDWH and Amity), we just have to be able to beat them.”
Shelton’s Jim Pjura returned to the lineup today after being out with a back injury.
“Jim is back and he makes our lineup deadly,” Gura said.
