Police: Derby Man Pulled Out Gun

Seymour police arrested a Derby man for allegedly pointing a gun at people in the Tri-Town Plaza parking lot in July.

Andrew Nieves, 25, of Seventh Street in Derby, turned himself in on a warrant Wednesday.

Police charged him with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree threatening and breach of peace.

He was released on a $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court Aug. 24.

Police said during the early morning hours of July 15, Nieves was in a dispute with a female co-worker in the parking lot. When the woman told a group of men about the dispute, they approached Nieves in his car, said Seymour Police Lt. Paul Satkowski.

Nieves allegedly pulled a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband, pointed it at the men and pulled back the slide on the gun, as if to load the chamber with a bullet, Satkowski said.

He then drove away, at which point witnesses said they heard shots fired.

Police did not find any bullet casings in the parking lot. When they interviewed Nieves, he denied the allegations. Satkowski said police applied for and were awarded a warrant for Nieves after they spoke with him.

Police did not specify where they worked, calling it only a local coffee shop.
