Law enforcement’s message to residents this winter season is quite simple. If people have to travel in treacherous weather use common sense.
The season’s first snowfall mixed with icy rain caused two one-car accidents along Oxford roadways Wednesday.
The first incident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and involved a Dodge Neon traveling north on Punkup Road operated by a Lisa Drive resident.
According to the police report, while traveling on a sharp curve, the driver swerved off the roadway approximately 200 feet south of East Hill Road.
The car crossed over the southbound lane and struck a large rock on the side of the road.
Police said in the report the icy road conditions played a part in the accident.
The driver was not injured and was issued a written warning for traveling too fast for road conditions.
The second accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on Oxford Road near in the area of Hogsback Road.
Police said a Chevy Avalanche operated by a Courtland Place resident rolled over onto its side after the driver lost control.
Fire personnel were called to the scene to extricate the driver through the windshield.
The driver, who was not injured, told police he lost control of the truck after hitting a patch of ice on the road.
The driver was issued an infraction for making an improper turn.
Resident Trooper Sgt. Dan Semosky said residents who do not need to go out in inclement weather should just stay home.
Semosky said residents that need to travel during snowy or icy weather should follow the speed limits and allow extra time to reach their destination.
He added that drivers should have the battery on their cell phone charged and extra weight in the back of their vehicles to avoid sliding on icy roads.
Semosky stressed that if people have to get to work, let someone know when they are leaving and only go out if it is absolutely necessary.
“If residents do not have to go out they should just stay home,” he said.
