A smoky odor inside the Hewitt Health and Rehab Center Wednesday night was caused by a smoldering cigarette bucket outside the assisted living facility.
Three companies of Shelton firefighters responded to the report of a smoky smell inside the building’s boiler room about 9 p.m. Wednesday, Assistant Chief Joseph Constantino said at the scene.
He said firefighters smelled another odor, consistent with a campfire or “outside burn,” upon arrival, but couldn’t locate its source. They had cleared the scene by 9:30 p.m. after determining the cause of the odor at Hewitt.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries, Constantino said, and the building, at 45 Maltby St., was not evacuated.
Constantino said the cigarette bucket was outside the building but near an air instake that went to the boiler room, where the smell was first reported.
He said the three-company response with EMS personnel also at the scene was a precaution because the building is an assisted living facility.
Maltby Street was closed from Coram Avenue to Prospect Avenue while firefighters were on the scene.
