Snow, Ice Claim Third Roof

Derby firefighters were called to the scene of a roof collapse at a detached garage behind a house off Park Avenue early Friday.

The roof caved in, damaging a car inside the old garage, said Derby Fire Chief William Nicoletti.

The call came in about 12:15 a.m. Friday. Firefighters contacted the city’s building inspector.

The electricity’s off, there’s one car inside, but there’s no real hazard. We’ll get hold of the building inspector and he’ll probably order it to be knocked down,” Nicoletti said.

In Ansonia Wednesday night, a detached three-bay garage on Wakelee Avenue was flattened by the weight of snow and ice.

The most serious collapse happened Saturday afternoon, when a canopy above the Shell gas station on Bridgeport Avenue collapsed. Click here to see the video from that collapse.

Valley firefighters were investigating two reports of possibly compromised structures overnight Friday.

Seymour firefighters were sent to Kathy Drive at about 1 a.m. Friday after police officers heard popping noises at a residence there, according to a radio transmission.

In Shelton, a homeowner asked for an inspection at about 1:15 a.m. after hearing noises coming from his roof on Fieldstone Drive.
