Ansonia Mayor’s Son Charged With Driving Under The Influence

Vince Della Volpe, a local coach and the son of Mayor James Della Volpe, was charged with driving under the influence after allegedly crashing into a parked car in Ansonia Saturday night.

Police said his blood alcohol content measured .17 and .16 in two breathalyzer tests. That is about twice the legal limit of .08.

Della Volpe, 28, was driving his girlfriend’s Volvo north on Marshal Lane at about 11 p.m. when he took a right onto Schumacher Drive and hit a parked car, according to police spokesman Lt. Andrew Cota.

Della Volpe was the only person in either vehicle. He was not injured.

Both cars were towed from the scene, Cota said.

Cota said he didn’t know where Della Volpe had been before the crash.

Della Volpe worked as an assistant coach for the Seymour High School baseball team last spring. In 2009 – 2010, he was listed as the basketball coach for the Ansonia girls junior varsity team.

Della Volpe’s phone number isn’t listed. He was unable to be reached for comment.

Mayor James Della Volpe said his family is dealing with the news.

He wasn’t treated any differently than anybody else by police,” Mayor Della Volpe said. We’re going to deal with it as a family, and that’s it,” Mayor Della Volpe said.

In addition to driving under the influence, Ansonia police also charged Vince Della Volpe with failing to drive in the proper lane.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court in Derby Dec. 16. He has no prior criminal record, according to the state’s court database.
