Special Olympic Torch Runs To Come Through The Valley

Police officers and Special Olympics athletes from Connecticut will carry the Special Olympics’ torch along several routes in the state Thursday and Friday.

Two of those routes will come through the Valley.

The Law Enforcement Torch Runs raise money and awareness for Connecticut Special Olympics each year.

On one route, officers started running in Seymour Thursday morning, in a trip that will end in Hartford Thursday evening.

The other route starts Friday in Trumbull, and comes through Shelton, Derby and Ansonia Friday afternoon.

Runners will come along Route 108 in Shelton, into downtown Shelton. They will cross Bridge Street in Derby at about 2:45 p.m.

The runners will travel along Route 34 and turn onto Route 115, heading toward Ansonia.

The runners will go through downtown Ansonia, before heading up Route 243 into Woodbridge, and finally ending in New Haven.

More than 1,500 officers and Special Olympics athletes will participate in the 2011 Torch Runs.

The Torch Runs serve as a fundraiser and public awareness event for the Special Olympics.

On Saturday, runners will meet at the 2011 Special Olympics Summer Games at Southern Connecticut State University.

The goal is to raise $550,000 for the Special Olympics in Connecticut.
