The Spooner House annual frozen turkey and fixings drive for holiday meal baskets has begun and will continue through mid December.
The goal for this holiday season is to prepare 750 meal baskets for the Valley Food Bank.
Items suggested for each basket are shown below or a list of the most needed non-perishable items may be found at actspooner.org.
The lower Naugatuck Valley needs to provide food service for more people and that includes helping them to obtain all the ingredients necessary for satisfying holiday meals. Individuals, families, businesses, schools, congregations and civic organizations are encouraged to collect items or complete baskets.
“Last year, we at the Spooner House Valley Food Bank, collected enough food for 700 baskets, providing the equivalent of 5,600 meals during the 2015 holidays,” explained Executive Director Susan Agamy.
“For thirty years, we have benefited from the support of popular Smile Dental Center owner, Dr. Bruce Sofferman and his wife Deborah and daughter Sophia who have helped so much with the annual food drive,” continued Agamy. “They wear traditional Pilgrim and Native American costumes and are joined by a Thanksgiving turkey mascot as they work the street to encourage drivers to drop off frozen turkeys and fixings.”
The Sofferman family’s annual appearance will be on Thursday, November 17 from 7 to 10 a.m. in front of the newest Smile Dental Center at 1000 Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton.
Dr. Sofferman’s Smile Dental Center at 61 Elizabeth Street in Derby will also be collecting frozen turkeys and fixings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November 14 trough 18.
“This has been a proud holiday tradition for my family for 30 years,” Dr. Sofferman noted. “We love giving back to the communities that have been so good to us and once again hope to be a major contributor to the Spooner House goal of providing healthy Thanksgiving meals for all in need.”
In addition to the Smile Dental Center drop offs, other locations and Holiday Food Drive events this year include Adams Hometown Markets in Shelton, Starbucks in Shelton, Super Stop and Shops in Ansonia and Shelton, the Boy Scouts “Scouting for Food” drive, the Girl Scout Troop 64164 food collection at First United Methodist Church in Shelton, the Shelton High School basketball clinic at Shelton Intermediate School, as well as continuing the tradition of frozen turkey drives at the Seymour Middle School and the Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School in Seymour.
