The Springfield Armory in Massachusetts will be the focus of the Oxford Historical Society’s program on Monday, March 28, at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at St. Peter’s Church Hall at 1 Dutton Road in Oxford and is open to the public.
Historical Society member John Konicki will display and discuss his antique 1861 model Springfield rifle. The film “The Springfield Armory” will also be shown.
Founded in 1777 as an arms depot, the Springfield Armory began producing small arms for use by patriots during the Revolutionary War and operated until 1968. The guns developed there influenced military tactics employed in all major American wars. In addition, Springfield Armory inventions and manufacturing processes strongly influenced the development of American industry. Today its 1840’s arsenal is open year round as the Springfield Armory National History Site, housing the world’s largest collection of United States military firearms.
Following the program, the Oxford Historical Society will hold a brief business meeting. Refreshments will be served.
