Staffieri Outpacing Dugatto In Fundraising

The first round of campaign finance disclosures show incumbent Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri has raised more than twice the money of challenger Anita Dugatto.

According to disclosures that were due July 10, the Staffieri for Mayor” re-election campaign raised $10,125 between April and June.

The Dr. Anita for Mayor 2013” election campaign raised $4,090.25 over the same time period.

Staffieri had 41 individual contributors to Dugatto’s 33. Staffieri is a Republican. Dugatto is a Democrat.

Staffieri had one major fundraiser between April and June, at La Sala Banquet Hall at the Sons of Italy on High Street. It was held May 16.

Dugatto’s campaign had a fundraiser June 6 at former Mayor Marc Garofalo’s house.

Staffieri’s campaign spent $3,614.96 between April and June. The campaign had $6,510.04 on hand as of June 30. The biggest expenditure was $829.53 to rent La Sala.

Dugatto’s campaign spent $2,076.36 between April and June. The campaign had $2,076.36 on hand as of June 30. The biggest expenditure was $365 for a voter list from the Democratic State Central Committee.

Staffieri said his fundraising is a pat-on-the-back for a job well done.

My campaign is hugely successful. I’m getting the support morally and I’m getting support financially,” he said. It’s really good to see.”

Staffieri’s single biggest donors are Derby Corporation Counsel Joseph Coppola and Derby resident William Korolyshun.

On the other end of the spectrum, Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti donated $25 to Staffieri’s campaign, the smallest amount of the 41 donors listed.

Lauretti recently made a $1.6 million profit from selling river-front land he owned in Shelton.

Staffieri laughed off a Valley Indy question about Lauretti’s donation.

Listen, Mark and I have been friends for years, going back to when he owned several restaurants and I owned a restaurant. We always helped each other out, like when someone would run out of prime rib, we’d bring some over. That’s the kind of relationship we’ve had,” Staffieri said.

Lauretti said he and his family have made two subsequent donations to Staffieri’s campaign and that there’s more to come.

Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller donated $100 to Staffieri’s re-election campaign.

Dugatto’s single largest donor was New Haven attorney Marjorie Shansky, who donated $500 to Dugatto’s campaign May 25.

Shansky represented Dugatto at a Derby Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in 2012 where Dugatto opposed a plan to convert a neighboring building on Elizabeth Street from office space to rental apartments. Dugatto is a dentist who works and lives on Elizabeth Street.

Dugatto’s other donors include former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, who donated $100. Fran Teodosio, Kevin Blake and Fred Stanek — of the law firm Welch, Teodosio, Stanek and Blake — each gave $50.

Dugatto said July 25 she’s happy with her campaigns efforts thus far. It’s her first time raising money to run for political office, so she’s more interested in talking to people and getting out in the community, she said.

We haven’t had any major fundraisers yet, just small ones, like pasta dinners and things like that,” Dugatto said. There is a lot of excitement out there.”

She noted Staffieri raised more money than his Democratic opponent in the 2011 election, but was re-elected by a narrow margin.

A Valley-wide fundraiser for area Democrats is scheduled for Sept. 22 at Coon Hollow Park in Derby.
