State COVID Infection Rate Remains Below 1 Percent

The latest data from the Naugatuck Valley Health District shows eight new COVID-19 cases have been reported within the agency’s jurisdiction since Aug. 31.

The jurisdiction includes Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour and Shelton. NVHD does not collect info for the Town of Oxford. Oxford is in the Pomperaug Health District.

The NVHD on Thursday released data showing:

  • Three new cases in Shelton
  • Two new cases in Derby
  • Two new cases in Naugatuck
  • One new case in Ansonia

Those are new cases since the NVHDs last data release on Aug. 31.

There have been 1,785 positive COVID-19 tests in the NVHDs jurisdiction since March.

SINCE MARCH

The video below is Gov. Ned Lamont’s coronavirus update from Sept. 3.

On the state level, 101 new positive tests were reported between Sept. 2 and Sept. 3. Only 65 people statewide are hospitalized because of COVID as of this moment.

As of yesterday the positivity rate was an encouraging 0.7 percent.

But the government is urging people to take precautions — social distancing, masks, no large gatherings — heading into Labor Day weekend so that the rate remains low as kids head back to school.

The COVID infection rate among young people is actually increasing, The Hartford Courant reported Thursday, as college students return for the fall semester.

Fact Check

Some Valley community Facebook pages have included posts from residents that misinterpret data from the CDC.

From USA Today:

The claim: Only 6 only of reported COVID-19 deaths were the result of the coronavirus

Our ruling: False
It is false and misleading to claim that only 6% of reported coronavirus deaths were the result of COVID-19. While comorbidities often exacerbate a person’s illness from the coronavirus, it is incorrect to state that they are the cause of death rather than the viral infection. We rate this claim FALSE.
