Vindicated.
That’s how First Selectman Paul Roy felt Wednesday after hearing the state Elections Enforcement Commission dismissed a complaint brought against Roy and Rosealie T. Averill, treasurer of the Democratic Town Committee.
“This was an attempt by the Republican Town Committee to try to discredit me early in my term, right after I was elected. I’m happy about this outcome. We try to do the right thing and we work hard,” Roy said. “Nothing improper was done and that is what I said for the whole time.”
The complaint was filed by Republican Town Committee chairman Bill Paecht. He took issue with a February even hosted by Seymour Democrats at John J. Sullivan’s restaurant in Ansonia.
Among Paecht’s complaints — that Seymour town employees were asked to buy tickets by their supervisors and that the Democrats didn’t properly list money raised from the event in campaign finance disclosure forms.
Paecht could not be reached Wednesday.
Averill said the complaint was based on half truths — but town Democrats have to defend themselves.
“People who attended were obviously members of the Democratic Town Committee, and it was not a case where they were town employees forced to buy tickets,” Averill said.
