State House Candidate Shares Statement Regarding George Floyd

Myra Rivers

I want to share my condolences and sympathy for the heinous murder of George Floyd. His senseless death has touched the lives of many, myself included, bringing on rage, anger, and sadness.

The black community and its supporters have been exhausted by heartbreak after heartbreak each time an innocent life is taken by those responsible for our protection and safety.

Yet as exhausted and tired as we are, now is also not the time to give up on the principles of justice, peace and equality.

In the words of Martin Luther King Jr..:

Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.”

Now is the time to double our efforts to unite as one community. To reach out in a spirit of understanding to those who feel marginalized, disenfranchised and forgotten. To truly hear and respect their voices.

And most importantly, to allow those voices to be a catalyst for change and a better tomorrow.

It is time to honor George Floyd by showing that only love can overcome the demons of hate.
