State Troopers Snag Alleged Drug Dealer

STATE POLICE PHOTOA 24-year-old Bridgeport man was charged with drug possession and reckless driving after being arrested by state police on Route 8 Jan. 2.

According to a summary sent to the media, Joshua Smith was going 96 mph near exit 12 of Route 8 south. (Editor’s note: State police alleged Smith gave them a false name, which was shared in the initial statement from state police)

Troopers were out conducting speed enforcement.” The highway’s maximum speed limit is 55 mph.

After being pulled over, Smith started making quick movements” inside his car, according to state police.

Smith was in a rental car with Florida plates, troopers said, but he wasn’t listed on the rental paperwork.

A search turned up 104 bags of suspected” heroin, weighing about an ounce.

Troopers said they also found a large amount” of cash and 3.9 grams of suspected crack cocaine.

Troopers charged Smith with reckless driving, possession of narcotics and illegal sale of drugs. Bond was set at $50,000 and he was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 17.
