Shelton police said a Stratford man stole more than $30,000 worth of electronics equipment out of a car in Shelton early Wednesday.
Police charged George Siler, 21, of Success Avenue in Stratford with first-degree larceny, two counts of third-degree burglary, and credit card theft.
Police found stolen electronics, credit cards and jewelry in Siler’s Stratford home, according to a press release issued by Lt. Robert Kozlowsky.
The Search
Residents on Sheehy Lane in Shelton called police at about 5:45 a.m. Wednesday to report a man going through cars parked in driveways on the road.
When police responded, they saw a white Honda parked on the street. An officer noticed the Honda didn’t have dew on it like the other cars, indicating it had been recently driven, Kozlowsky said.
The officer took down the license plate number and then followed some footprints to try to locate a suspect.
Officers weren’t able to find the suspect, but when they returned to the street, the white Honda was gone.
Police traced the car to Siler’s home in Stratford, where they went to talk with him later that morning.
Siler denied having been in Shelton that morning.
Inside his house, though, police noticed a laptop bag with the name of one of the people on Sheehy Lane who had reported items stolen.
They arrested Siler.
Unlocked Cars
Two cars had items stolen from them on Sheehy Lane, Kozlowsky said. Both were unlocked at the time of the theft.
The man whose laptop was recovered had $30,000 worth of electronics equipment, including the laptop and radio equipment, inside the unlocked truck.
“Police are reminding people to always lock their vehicles,” the statement said. “Also, do not leave any valuables inside a vehicle. If it is not practical to remove valuables from the vehicle, at least hide them from view.”
