Suburban Propane In Derby Is Safe

Suburban Propane is functioning normally after being shut down Friday as state officials investigated reports of problem propane.

The facility on Water Street re-opened Tuesday, according to Peter Tishima, a spokesman for the New Jersey-based company.

The state Department of Consumer Protection sent out a notice Friday warning that odorless propane may have been delivered to nine propane distributors in the state. An odorant is added to make sure consumers know when there’s a leak.

Independent, third-party testing conducted at our Derby facility on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010 demonstrated that the propane stored at our Derby plant was completely within the normal range of required odorization levels. Confirmation of these results by the Office of the State Fire Marshall led to the re-opening of the Derby plant,” Tishima said.
