A 39-year-old man who already has multiple burglary convictions on his record is suspected of stealing items from cars and houses in Shelton.
Christopher Right of Shelton is charged with assaulting a police officer, interfering, second-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned today (Friday, June 8) in Superior Court in Derby.
On Thursday morning Shelton police received calls from several residents who said items had been stolen from their cars, sheds and in one case, a garage. The thefts had happened overnight, according to police.
In one case, a homeowner left his car parked in the driveway. Right is suspected of getting in to the car, stealing items inside — then using the homeowner’s garage door opener to get into the garage, where he allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of tools.
“The area had been plagued in the past three weeks of similar incidents,” according to a prepared statement from police.
At about 11:15 a.m. Thursday, a resident called to report a suspicious pickup truck parked near the woods.
Police responded to check it out and allegedly found Right with “numerous tools and electronics” in the truck.
Right bolted as police were interviewing him, police said. Officers tackled him in a backyard, but he continued to fight, so officers fired a Taser at him.
“Upon searching Right’s vehicle, officers located many of the items stolen from the previous night,” police said. “Officers also located items stolen during previous days.”
Right is being held on a $300,000.00 bond. Right will be arraigned today in Derby Court.
Right’s criminal record goes back to about 2009 — and he had recently been released from jail after serving a few months on a burglary conviction.
Police are in the process of identifying the items recovered. More charges are possible.
“Residents are urged to lock their vehicles while parked in their driveways. Residents also are encourage to call police immediately when something appears suspicious,” police said.
