Update: Suspicious Package In Shelton Triggers Hazmat Response

The FBI is analyzing the a brown substance found in a package at 19 Forest Parkway Wednesday.

An employee opening mail at Freedom Disability noticed a brown, dust-like substance in a package, Sgt. Robert Kozlowsky said.

The incident was reported at 1:50 p.m.

In addition to Shelton EMS, fire and police, hazmat crews from Derby and Milford responded to the scene, along with the FBI, U.S. Postal investigators and a bomb squad from Stamford.

There were no injuries.

Emergency officials should receive word within 48 hours as to whether the substance posed a threat, Assistant Fire Chief Nick Verdicchio said.

Shelton emergency crews responded to a similar hazmat call in August.

These incidents pop up,” Verdicchio said. It could be a copycat who read about it in the paper. Most of these are unfounded.”

At the least, the multiple hazmat calls recently in Shelton allows fire, EMS and police to double check the procedures they have in place to handle hazmat incidents, Verdicchio said.

Emergency crews were at the scene until 5:43 p.m.
