SUV Hits School Bus In Ansonia

ANSONIA A 60-year-old man was taken to the hospital after hitting a school bus in a head-on collision Friday morning, according to police.

One child sustained a minor cut in the crash, but no other students reported injuries, police said.

In a prepared statement, Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said the crash was reported at 8:23 a.m. on North Main Street between Ridge and Underhill roads.

A 2002 Chevrolet Blazer and a First Student school bus were involved in the head on collision,” Lynch said. The First Student bus was transporting students to Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School in New Haven. There were 10 students on the bus, ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old.”

Lynch said all of the students were released to parents or guardians at the scene.

Tthe only reported injury was a minor cut/scratch to one of the students,” Lynch said. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 60 year-old male, suffered various injuries to his upper body but was coherent and alert on scene. The male was transported to a Bridgeport area hospital for treatment, as of the writing of this release his condition is unknown.”

Lynch said an initial investigation indicated the Chevrolet was traveling north on North Main Street and crossed the center line of the road and hit the bus, which was headed south.

The driver of the Chevrolet admitted to the investigating officers to being distracted with his cell phone while driving,” Lynch said. The investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.”
