UPDATE: SWAT Team Raids Downtown Shelton Residence

PHOTO: Ethan FryA SWAT team raided a home on Perry Avenue in downtown Shelton Thursday morning after a month-long drug investigation.

Police cruisers and a SWAT truck converged on the house, at 27B Perry Ave., just before 9 a.m.

Shelton Police’s canine unit was also on scene.

Police arrested John Thompson, 29, who lives at the home, on charges of possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of heroin within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of heroin with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, and four counts of risk of injury to a minor.

A 2‑year-old who was inside the home was carried away by EMS personnel moments after police raided the house. Minutes later a detective led Thompson from the home in handcuffs. He was driven away from the scene in a police cruiser.

Story continues after the photo gallery:

Police said three of Thompson’s children had left for school before officers raided the home. The 2‑year-old had been sleeping in a crib at the time of the raid, according to police, and was taken from the scene without incident.”

Thompson was held in lieu of $150,000 bond for arraignment Friday at Superior Court in Derby.

The arrest stems from a month-long investigation into heroin sales in the downtown area,” Capt. Michael Madden said in a press release issued Thursday morning. Police seized approximately $1,000 worth of heroin from the home, packaging materials, and an unspecified amount of cash.”

The SWAT truck — an armored vehicle from the New Haven Police Department — and a police cruiser had been parked on White Street earlier Thursday morning before the home was raided at 8:51 a.m. Madden said the Southwest Region 2 Special Response Team, a tactical unit comprised of police from Milford, Ansonia, West Haven, and Orange, also assisted in the raid.

Police stretched crime scene tape across Perry Avenue during the raid. The road was reopened about 9:30 a.m., but detectives and police remained on scene.
