The Derby school board could schedule a special meeting in the next few weeks to talk about replacing departing Superintendent Stephen Tracy.
Tracy submitted his letter of resignation to the school board April 2.
He’s leaving at the end of June to become the superintendent of Unified District No. 2, which is responsible for the education of students in foster and residential care in Connecticut.
The school board had a meeting the day after Tracy’s resignation but did not talk at about how to replace him.
“We didn’t have much time at that meeting to do anything,” school board president Ken Marcucio, Sr. said. “We’re probably going to have a special meeting or put it on the agenda of our April 19 meeting,” he said.
It’s an important time in Derby, as city and school officials explore whether consolidating or regionalizing educational services is in the city’s best interest.
Mayor Anthony Staffieri told the Valley Indy last week he hopes the school board holds off on naming a permanent replacement for Tracy.
“Hopefully the Board of Education, as they look to replace Dr. Tracy, look to appoint someone as an interim superintendent first,” Staffieri said. “We’re researching whether to regionalize or not, so it might be worth it for the Board of Education to go a little slow. Let’s put an interim, see where the regionalization study takes us and then we can make an informed decision once we’re there,” he said.
